My Blog

OK, you were planning to go to Athens to see the Parthenon and then Mykonos for a little skinny dipping. But no more! Too many videos of sad people lined up at ATMs, protestors throwing petrol bombs, stories about unhappy travelers with credit cards that don’t work.

Cheer up! There is a North American alternative- and that is Toronto, Canada. Toronto the good? Isn’t it, well, boring? Obviously you haven’t been there in a while. You can begin your alternative Greek experience by tanning yourself all over at the clothing optional beach at Hanlan’s Point. It is just a short ferry ride from downtown Toronto. Perhaps the specimens on display might have slightly more padding due to accumulated lifelong enjoyment of Canada’s fabulous beers, which constitute a primary national food group, along with maple syrup and Canadian bacon. Hey, if you are weird enough to prance around on a public beach without your swimsuit, this should not present a problem!

The U.S. dollar is strong in Canada and goes a long way. These days for around 77 U.S. cents you get one Canadian dollar. The ATMs all are packed with cash and are in working order. The Pan America games are now over and Toronto’s prices have returned to their reasonable normal. Your credit card will work, assuming you have recently paid your bill.

The natives are friendly! Canadians are world famous for their outgoing politeness. Recently, they have proven this again to the world community by even demonstrating their respect for an unfortunate road kill raccoon! Check out hashtag #DeadRacoonTO . Why can’t we adopt similar compassion in America? Sadly, in many rural areas of the U.S. such a find would have been immediately snatched up, skinned for its pelt, and served for dinner. Lord knows what would have happened to the unfortunate creature in New York City or San Francisco, despite their acclaimed status as sanctuary cities!

If you still need convincing; there is great Greek food in Toronto! Check out the area around GreekTown on the Danforth. It is packed with fabulous Greek restaurants, bistros and bakeries. Also, in Toronto you can try Chinese, French, American, Hungarian,Vietnamese, Thai, et al.- cuisine along with an evening at the many theatres, bars and nightclubs which rival New York or Chicago.

So get going! There is still plenty of summer left. And when you get there, be sure to ask for the dead raccoon discount! They may give it to you. Tell them Davis Hewitt, the famous author of Killing The Blood Cleaner sent you. And don’t forget the sunscreen!
